What are the Appraiser Independence Requirements (AIR)?

Appraisal Independence Requirements are federal standards set forth in Section 129E of the Truth in Lending Act that apply to consumer credit transactions secured by a consumer's principal dwelling. They work alongside USPAP, which requires appraisers to act independently and impartially and bars accepting assignments with predetermined conclusions. Complaints about independence or USPAP violations can be made through the Appraisal Complaint National Hotline at 877-739-0096, which refers them to the appropriate state or federal agency.
