Steps to Become an Appraiser in Texas
Your path to becoming a licensed appraiser in Texas starts with completing your Trainee Appraiser education. This foundational step prepares you to gain real-world experience under the guidance of a certified supervisory appraiser. Our state-approved online courses are designed to help you confidently meet Texas and AQB qualifying education requirements while giving you the flexibility to learn on your schedule.
To become a Texas Appraiser Trainee, you must:
- Complete 87 hours of qualifying education
- Line up a supervisory appraiser holding an active Texas Licensed Residential, Certified Residential, or Certified General credential
- Submit fingerprints for a background check through the Texas Department of Public Safety
- Apply for your Appraiser Trainee credential through TALCB's REALM Portal
- Begin logging supervised experience hours toward your next license level
- Upgrade your license level as you gain experience
Note: Texas does not require a licensing exam at the Trainee level — the exam requirement applies once you advance to Licensed Residential, Certified Residential, or Certified General.
