What does a county appraiser do?

A county appraiser, usually called an assessor, works for local government and estimates property values for property tax purposes. Unlike fee appraisers, who value one property at a time, assessors value whole neighborhoods at once using mass appraisal techniques, and they must be able to defend their assessments at public hearings. Local government is the largest employer of property appraisers and assessors, accounting for 41% of jobs in 2025.
