What does an art appraiser do?
An art appraiser estimates the value of artwork, which falls under personal property appraisal, a discipline distinct from real estate appraisal. Federal law does not require a state license for personal property appraisers, although some states do require certification. The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) includes personal property standards; they are legally required for real property appraisers but not for personal property appraisers, though many organizations adopt them and courts increasingly recognize them.
