How do I become a life and health insurance broker?

Most states license brokers and agents the same way, as insurance producers. You complete any state-required prelicensing education (New York, for example, requires 40 hours for combined life and accident & health, or 20 hours for a single line), pass the state licensing exam, submit to a fingerprint background check where the state requires it, and apply through the state or NIPR. The difference is who you represent: an agent acts for the insurance companies that appoint them, while a broker represents the insured.
