How hard is the personal lines insurance exam?
The personal lines exam is a multiple-choice test that most candidates can pass after several weeks of focused study; prep providers recommend about 35 to 40 hours. Most states set the passing score at 70%, though California requires 60% on its producer exams. Pass rates fluctuate considerably by state, and some states publish their rates while others do not, so no reliable national pass rate exists.
DC does not offer a stand-alone personal lines exam. You earn personal lines authority by passing the Pearson VUE Property and/or Casualty exams, which require a scaled passing score of 70. The Property exam has 75 scored questions and the Casualty exam has 80 scored questions, and each has a two-hour time limit.
