How long does it take to become a Medicare insurance agent?
Plan on a few weeks to a few months. First you need a resident insurance license with a health line of authority: complete any required prelicensing education, pass the state exam, get fingerprinted, and apply, which states typically review in 7 to 10 days. After that, health-licensed agents must complete annual Marketplace registration and training through CMS, and agents selling Medicare Advantage plans must pass an annual test with a score of 85% or higher.
There is no separate Medicare agent license in South Carolina; you sell Medicare supplement products under a Life or Accident and Health producer license, and the exam outlines include Medicare supplement topics. Because the state requires no prelicensing education, your timeline depends mainly on how long you study for the exam. After passing, wait 48 hours before applying through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR), and resident applicants must also submit fingerprints after applying.
