What are the requirements to get a property and casualty insurance license?
Every state requires you to be at least 18 years old, pass the property and casualty licensing exam, and submit an application with a background check, which usually includes fingerprinting. Prelicensing education varies sharply by state, from no required hours (for example, Texas) to 200 hours for Florida's General Lines course. Most states also waive the exam for CPCU designees and for applicants already licensed for the same lines in a reciprocal state.
New Jersey resident applicants must be at least 18 years old, complete 20 hours of prelicensing education for Property and 20 for Casualty (40 combined), and pass the PSI licensing exam with a score of at least 70%. You must also complete Live Scan fingerprinting ($66.05) and apply online through the National Insurance Producer Registry, with state fees of $170 for the major-line license.
