What does an insurance broker do?

An insurance broker represents the insurance buyer rather than an insurer, advising on coverage and placing policies with any authorized company that will accept the business. A broker cannot bind coverage; that step falls to the insurer or its appointed agent. Brokers earn commissions, typically 2% to 8% of the annual premium, and some states also allow brokers to charge separate fees for advisory services.
