What does it mean to be a licensed-only insurance agent?
A licensed-only agent holds a state producer license but has no active appointment with an insurance company. The license itself does not create authority to represent or commit an insurer; under the NAIC Producer Licensing Model Act and state laws like Florida's, a person must be both licensed and appointed before transacting insurance. A licensed-only agent can market and prepare to sell, but cannot bind or place coverage until a carrier appoints them.
A licensed-only agent holds a valid North Carolina insurance license but has no appointment with an insurance company. An agent may not sell insurance until appointed by one or more insurance companies, and can sell only the products of the companies for which appointed and licensed. Company appointments are processed electronically through NIPR. A producer license with a major line such as Life or Property is perpetual, but it cannot be used for sales without an appointment.
