What is personal lines insurance?
Personal lines is property and casualty insurance sold to individuals and families for primarily noncommercial purposes, as defined in the NAIC Producer Licensing Model Act. It covers products such as personal auto and homeowners insurance and excludes commercial risks. Many states issue a separate personal lines license with a narrower scope than a full property and casualty license.
Personal lines insurance covers risks to individuals and their property, such as homeowners, personal auto, and personal umbrella policies, rather than commercial risks. In DC, personal lines is a producer line of authority, but there is no stand-alone personal lines exam; you earn the authority by passing the Property and/or Casualty exams. A major property, casualty, or personal lines license also includes the limited lines of travel, credit, car rental, crop, and surety automatically.
