What is the difference between an independent adjuster and a public adjuster?
An independent adjuster works for insurance companies, investigating and settling claims on the insurer's behalf. A public adjuster works for the policyholder, negotiating the settlement of the policyholder's own property damage or loss claim, and is usually paid a percentage of the final settlement. Most states license the two roles separately, and public adjusters typically face extra requirements such as surety bonds.
