Why do insurance agents make so much money?
Agent pay is commission-based, so earnings scale with sales rather than hours worked. The median wage for insurance sales agents was $62,280 in May 2025, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $138,140; commissions on life policies commonly run 60% to 80% of the first-year premium, versus roughly 5% to 15% on new auto and home policies. Agents who build a large book of renewal business, and agency owners who keep their renewals, sit at the top of that range.
