What property management courses are available?

Property management content appears in several Alaska real estate education requirements. The salesperson post-licensing curriculum includes a 4-hour Property Management module, and the 2024-2026 DCE cycle includes a 2-hour "Fair Housing & Property Management" topic. Property management is also one of the practice areas covered in the 8-hour DCE core curriculum under 12 AAC 64.500. Outside of state licensing requirements, the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) offers a Certified Property Manager (CPM) designation, which requires 8 certification courses and 36 months of real estate management experience.

Property Management is one of the approved elective courses that satisfies the third-course requirement for the California salesperson license, alongside Real Estate Principles and Real Estate Practice. Each DRE-approved course is a minimum of 45 hours and must be taken at an institution accredited by WASC or a comparable regional accrediting agency, or at a private real estate school with DRE-approved courses. The DRE maintains a searchable database of approved statutory and pre-license courses on its website, where you can filter by course type (resident or correspondence) and subject area. Most California community colleges also offer real estate curriculum including Property Management.

A 30-hour property management course qualifies as a broker pre-licensing elective in Connecticut, satisfying the elective requirement in place of two 15-hour courses or 20 documented real estate transactions in the previous 5 years. The Connecticut DCP maintains a searchable database of approved schools and courses, including property management offerings, accessible through the DCP real estate portal.

DC does not require pre-licensing education for a Property Manager license, though at least one DC Real Estate Commission-approved provider offers a non-mandated 45-hour Property Manager pre-license course. A 3-hour DCREC-approved Property Management course is required as part of the 15-hour CE requirement for license renewal. Endorsement and reciprocity applicants must also complete a 3-hour Property Management course to qualify for DC licensure.

Property managers in Montana are licensed under a separate program from real estate salespersons and brokers. The property manager application fee is $50 plus a $5 contingent litigation fee, and active licensees must complete 12 hours of continuing education annually. New property manager licensees must complete 4 hours of property management trust account continuing education by their first renewal date, and 12 hours total by their second renewal date.

Property management is available as a 30-hour approved elective course (Course 0044PM) that satisfies the third pre-licensing course requirement for a Nebraska salesperson license. Additionally, licensees who provide or supervise property management must complete 3 hours of approved property management coursework each 2-year continuing education period. These courses appear on the Nebraska Real Estate Commission's approved-education list.

NRED's Form 502 identifies property management as one of five approved course types offered by Nevada real estate schools, alongside classroom instruction, distance education, broker management, and business broker courses. Approved schools offer property management courses in classroom, distance, or combined formats, and the state's approved-education list (Form 502) specifies which course types each school provides. Course providers determine their own schedules and prices. Property management is also a separate permit category in Nevada, requiring 9 hours of continuing education for permit renewal regardless of license status.

Property management in New Mexico requires a broker license with a property management endorsement. The required coursework includes a 6-hour NM Uniform Owner-Resident Relations Act (UORRA) course or a 6-hour Commercial Property Management course, plus additional property management hours of 6 for associate brokers and 12 for qualifying brokers within each 3-year cycle. Commission-approved education providers offer these property management courses, and both qualifying brokers and all property managers must also attend at least one NMREC meeting, rule hearing, or disciplinary hearing during each 3-year cycle.

Oregon offers a separate property manager license that requires pre-license education from an Agency-approved school. For first renewal of a property manager license, a Property Manager Advanced Practices (PMAP) course and the Law and Rule Required Course (LARRC) are required, totaling 30 hours of continuing education. The Oregon Real Estate Agency maintains a provider lookup for PMAP courses through its eLicense system.

Pennsylvania's broker pre-licensing education includes two property management courses as part of the required 240 hours (16 credits): Residential Property Management (30 hours, 2 credits) and Non-Residential Property Management (30 hours, 2 credits). These courses count toward the broker education requirement and must be completed within 10 years of passing both portions of the broker examination. One broker credit equals 15 hours of instruction.

South Carolina requires a Commission-approved Property Management Course for a property manager license, and a 7-hour PMIC Course for a Property Manager-in-Charge designation. The SC Real Estate Commission maintains a list of approved providers and courses under Document 140 (Pre-Exam Course Provider and Courses) on its Pre-Licensing page, and a calendar of scheduled courses under Document 150. The South Dakota Real Estate Commission requires a 40-hour Fundamentals of Property Management course for the Property Manager license, available through providers on the commission's approved-education list. New property managers licensed on or after January 1, 2019 must also complete 30 hours of post-license education, all in required courses. The commission maintains its approved pre-licensing and continuing education provider lists on its website.

TREC lists approved property management elective courses on its education page alongside pre-licensing and continuing education course listings. Property management appears as an elective topic within the 16-hour CE requirement, and the 6-hour TREC Core Course also addresses property management as one of its subject areas. Licensees can complete these electives online through TREC-approved education providers.

Utah offers a Property Management Sales Agent license with a $50 new application fee, and the state's mandatory 3-hour continuing education course includes a Property Management version (designated MP) alongside Residential and Commercial versions. Property management also appears as an approved core continuing education topic covering leasing and property management practices. The Utah Division of Real Estate provides an online education course search tool where licensees can find approved courses by category, including real estate property management.

The Virginia Real Estate Board recognizes Real Estate Property Management as a broker-related course option within its 180-hour broker pre-license education framework. Broker applicants may count one broker-related course toward the education requirement, choosing from options that also include Real Estate Investments, Real Estate Economics, and Business Law, among others. The maximum allowable credit for a single broker-related course is 45 hours.

Property management topics are available as continuing education electives through some approved Wyoming education providers, though property management is not a standalone pre-licensing course. Licensees may take elective courses to fulfill part of the 21 elective hours required during each three-year renewal cycle. Any course approved by the Wyoming Real Estate Commission, whether online or in a classroom, qualifies for elective credit.
