Which testing provider administers the real estate licensing exam?

It depends on the state. Most state commissions contract with a private testing company, and the two dominant vendors are PSI and Pearson VUE. Some states administer their own exams instead: California runs its exams through the Department of Real Estate, and New York administers its salesperson exam through the Department of State.

Pearson VUE administers Alabama's real estate licensing exam, having replaced PSI effective January 3, 2023. Candidates schedule exams through Pearson VUE at home.pearsonvue.com/al/realestate or by calling 888-926-9488. Pearson VUE offers all salesperson, broker, and reciprocal license examinations for the Alabama Real Estate Commission.

Pearson VUE administers the Alaska real estate licensing exam for both salesperson and broker levels under contract with the Alaska Real Estate Commission. The exam is offered weekly in Anchorage, semi-monthly in Fairbanks, and quarterly in Juneau. Candidates can schedule appointments through Pearson VUE's website or by calling 800-274-5992.

Pearson VUE administers all Arizona real estate licensing examinations for both salesperson and broker candidates. Arizona real estate exams are not available through online proctoring (OnVUE) and must be taken in person at a Pearson test center. Pearson VUE administers the Arkansas Real Estate License Examinations for both salesperson and broker candidates. The standard exam fee is $44 per attempt, paid directly to PSI.

PSI Services LLC (PSI) administers the Massachusetts real estate licensing exam on behalf of the Board of Registration of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons. PSI offers the exam at approved test centers across Massachusetts and remotely via online proctoring. PSI's real estate exam content is ARELLO-accredited, and scores are displayed on screen at the end of the examination with score reports emailed to candidates.

PSI Services, LLC administers the Michigan real estate licensing exam for both salespersons and brokers. Salesperson applicants must first submit their application through MiPLUS and upload their 40-hour prelicensure certificate before PSI sends an eligibility email with a Candidate ID, typically within 24 to 48 hours of approval. PSI Services LLC administers the Missouri real estate licensing exam, effective April 24, 2023, when PSI acquired AMP's real estate testing business. Pearson VUE administers the Montana real estate licensing examination under contract with the Montana Board of Realty Regulation. Effective July 29, 2025, candidates must first register with the Nevada Real Estate Division before scheduling an exam through Pearson VUE.

PSI is the official testing provider for the New Hampshire Real Estate Commission. Candidates register for the exam online directly with PSI, and the NH Real Estate Commission no longer accepts Exam Registration Forms or exam payments. PSI is the examination contractor for the New Mexico Real Estate Commission. Candidates register for the broker's examination through PSI, and the exam fee is $95 per attempt, paid directly to PSI. PSI offers testing at accredited test centers nationwide and through secure online proctoring for remote testing. PSI's real estate exam content is ARELLO-accredited.

New York administers its real estate licensing exam through the Department of State at its own testing sites, not through a third-party provider such as PSI or Pearson VUE. The Department of State offers exams at 11 locations across the state, including Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Franklin Square, Hauppauge, New York City, Plattsburgh, Pomona, Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica. PSI provides examinations through a network of computer-based test centers in North Dakota and also offers online proctoring as a delivery option. Applicants can schedule and take the exam at any time without needing test codes or prior approval from the commission. The exam fee is $134 per attempt, paid directly to PSI.

PSI administers the Ohio real estate licensing exam. After the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing processes an application, it exports the applicant's information to PSI, which then emails the candidate a Candidate Information Bulletin with scheduling instructions. PSI offers both in-person testing at accredited test centers and secure online proctoring for Ohio real estate exams.

Pearson VUE administers the Oklahoma real estate licensing exams. OREC transitioned from PSI to Pearson VUE, with Pearson VUE beginning to administer exams on April 2, 2024. Candidates must apply to the Oklahoma Real Estate Commission (OREC) first; once approved, Pearson VUE sends an email within 48 hours with a candidate ID and scheduling access. Salesperson exam eligibility is processed through the Clarus portal (pare.useclarus.com), while broker exam eligibility is processed through the PALS portal (pals.pa.gov). The candidate then registers and schedules directly with PSI, and the examination registration fee is paid to PSI upon registration.

PSI Services LLC administers the South Dakota real estate licensing exam under contract with the state Real Estate Commission. PSI administers the real estate licensing exams for the Tennessee Real Estate Commission. Candidates schedule exams through PSI's website at test-takers.psiexams.com/tnre or by calling (855) 340-3710, and exams are available at Tennessee test centers or through secure remote proctoring.

Pearson VUE administers the Texas real estate licensing exam under contract with the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC). The sales exam fee is $58 per attempt, paid at the time of reservation by credit card, debit card, or voucher. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance, and walk-in examinations are not available. After a candidate passes both portions and clears the background check, TREC issues the license.

Pearson VUE administers the Utah real estate licensing exam under contract with the state. Candidates must make an online reservation at least 24 hours before the desired exam date, and walk-in testing is not available. The exam fee is $69 per attempt. Pearson VUE operates test centers in 10 Utah cities, including Bountiful, Draper, Ogden, and Orem, and candidates may also test at any Pearson VUE test center nationally.

PSI Services administers the national portion of the Vermont real estate licensing exam for both salespersons and brokers. Candidates schedule the national exam through PSI's website or by phone. The state portion is not administered by PSI; it is embedded in the online license application process managed by the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation (OPR), and applicants receive a link to complete it within their application.
