Appraisal FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask about appraisal licensing, with the answer for every state we cover.

2 of 2 questions

  • How many supervised experience hours does an appraiser trainee need to log?

A trainee logs experience toward the next credential, not for the trainee credential itself, which has no experience requirement. The national minimum for Licensed Residential is 1,000 hours of supervised appraisal experience gained in no fewer than 6 months, and the trainee and supervisor must record all completed work in a log for state review at upgrade time. States may set higher floors; New York, for example, requires the experience hours over not less than 24 months.

  • Is there an appraiser trainee or apprenticeship program for military service members and veterans?

Yes. The occupation has two US Department of Labor-approved registered apprenticeship titles: Appraisal and Valuation of Real Property, and Licensed Residential Real Property Appraiser. The Department of the Interior's Appraisal and Valuation Services Office also runs a three-year Appraiser Apprentice Program, open to federal and non-federal staff, that leads toward a Certified General license; it requires a four-year degree, and openings are posted on usajobs.gov.
