Insurance FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask about insurance licensing, with the answer for every state we cover.

2 of 2 questions

  • How do I get a commercial property and casualty insurance license?

There is no separate commercial license in most states: a property and casualty producer license covers both personal and commercial lines. You complete any prelicensing education your state requires, pass the state licensing exam, submit to a background check with fingerprints, and apply through the state or the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Texas's general lines property and casualty license, for example, covers home, auto, commercial, and liability insurance.

  • Where can I find a study guide for the personal lines insurance exam?

Exam administrators publish the official study material. Pearson VUE, PSI, and Prometric each post candidate handbooks and exam content outlines showing the testable topics and question counts, so start with the outline for your state. Pearson VUE sells practice tests for $19.95 each (50 general plus 25 state-generic questions), and Prometric and PSI both offer free practice tests and study apps. Most state insurance departments also post exam information and candidate resources on their websites.
