Commonly Asked Questions on Acquiring a Real Estate License in Missouri

You must be at least 18 years old to get a Missouri real estate license.

There are four steps to earn an MO real estate license.

Step 1: Complete the compulsory 72-hour real estate course in Missouri consisting of 2 parts.

  • A 48-hour Missouri real estate course from a state-approved real estate course provider.
  • A 24-hour Missouri Real Estate Practice Course (MREP).

You may complete the MREP section after you pass the State Licensing Exam but before applying for a real estate license. Submit the license application within six months of completing the 48-hour course. You must take a course exam after each section and pass it with a minimum 75% grade.

Step 2: Next, schedule the State Licensing Exam through PSI Services either over the telephone or via email.

The licensing exam consists of two parts, the National section, and the State section.

  • The National section has 100 multiple-choice questions and you must answer at least 70 of them correctly.
  • The State section has 40 multiple-choice questions and you must answer at least 30 of them correctly.

Passing the licensing exam is important to get a real estate license in Missouri.

Step 3: After clearing the state licensing exam, you must submit a background check. The process to do so involves two actions.

  • Get Fingerprinted
  • Clear the federal criminal history background check

Contact the approved statewide vendor IDEMIA (IDENTOGO) to submit your fingerprints.

The Missouri Real Estate Commission (MREC) has the discretion to approve or decline an application for a real estate license based on the seriousness the criminal record. MREC generally receives the background check result from the Missouri State Highway Patrol within 3 to 5 days.

Step 4: Find a licensed broker or brokerage firm to employ you to get an active real estate license. As a salesperson, you must be employed by a broker in the initial stages of your career.

Now, apply for a Missouri real estate license on the Missouri Division of Professional Registration website. Do not carry out any real estate activities before a license is issued.

  • Application Fee for Missouri Real Estate License: $90.00
