No, the required coursework is not free. A state-licensed mortgage loan originator must complete 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-licensing education from an approved course provider, and the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) itself does not offer courses, in order to keep the course-approval process independent. Providers charge for their coursework, and prices vary. The one free study aid NMLS publishes is the SAFE MLO test content outline, which it recommends all test takers review.
