Can I talk to a mortgage broker for free?

A mortgage broker's services are not free: brokers charge a loan-specific fee, per the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and that fee may be paid by the borrower or by the lender, but not by both. Checking a broker costs nothing, though. NMLS Consumer Access is a free public website where anyone can verify whether a company or individual is authorized to conduct business in their state.
