Do I need a loan officer to get a mortgage?

You do not hire a loan officer yourself; the lender or broker you apply with provides one. Someone on the lender side takes your application and negotiates terms, and even online lenders use loan officers to finalize transactions. You can choose between a direct lender, which offers its own products, and a mortgage broker, which shops multiple lenders on your behalf.
