How do I become a mortgage specialist with no experience?
No prior mortgage experience is required. You must complete at least 20 hours of pre-licensing education approved by the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS), pass the national SAFE test with a score of at least 75%, submit fingerprints for an FBI criminal background check, authorize a credit report, and be sponsored by a state-licensed employer. Some states add state-specific education hours. Most candidates finish the process in four to eight weeks.
California does not require prior industry experience for the individual Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) license. You need sponsorship from a DFPI-licensed employer, 20 hours of NMLS-approved education, a passing score on the SAFE test, and satisfactory background and credit checks. The real estate broker path does require two years of full-time salesperson experience or a four-year real estate degree, so most newcomers without a license enter through DFPI.
