How long can an NMLS license remain inactive?

NMLS sets no single national limit on inactive status; state agencies set their own rules. Illinois, for example, ends inactive status when the license expires and charges a reactivation fee after more than 90 calendar days of inactivity, while New York lets an inactive license continue as long as the annual fee is paid and education is completed. If the license lapses entirely, two national deadlines apply: 20 hours of pre-licensing education expire after 3 years without a valid license or federal registration, and SAFE test results expire after 5 consecutive years without either.
