How much commission does a mortgage broker make per loan?

Mortgage brokers typically earn a commission, called an origination fee, of about 1% to 2% of the loan amount, paid by either the borrower or the lender but not both. Federal law under Regulation Z prohibits loan originator compensation from varying based on the terms of the transaction, and a broker paid directly by the consumer cannot also be paid by anyone else in that transaction.
