How much do mortgage lenders make per loan?

A mortgage broker's fee on a loan typically runs 1% to 2% of the loan amount, paid by the borrower or the lender, but not both. Federal law prohibits an individual loan originator's commission from varying based on the terms of the mortgage; a lender may instead pay a salary, a fixed amount per loan, or a fixed percentage of the amount of credit extended, with a permitted minimum or maximum.
