Is it better to use a local mortgage lender than a national or online lender?

Neither is categorically better. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises borrowers to shop around for the best loan terms regardless of whether they use a mortgage broker or a direct lender. Some financial institutions operate as both lenders and brokers, so the bureau recommends asking whether a broker is involved in the transaction.
