What are the requirements to obtain an MLO license?

To obtain a state MLO license, you must complete at least 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-licensing education (3 hours federal law, 3 hours ethics, 2 hours nontraditional mortgage products, 12 hours electives), pass the SAFE MLO Test with a score of at least 75%, and submit fingerprints for an FBI criminal background check and authorize a credit report. Federal standards also require no felony conviction in the prior 7 years (or ever, for fraud-related felonies) and demonstrated financial responsibility. In most states, the license becomes active only after your employer sponsors you in NMLS.
