What commission percentage do mortgage loan originators earn?

Industry practice puts mortgage loan originator commission at roughly 1% to 2% of the loan amount. Federal law sets the boundaries on how it is paid: commissions cannot vary based on the terms of the loan, and a lender may pay a salary, a fixed amount per loan, a fixed percentage of the loan amount, or a combination.
