What is a junior mortgage loan officer and what do they do?

No separate junior license category exists under the SAFE Act: any individual who takes a residential mortgage loan application or offers or negotiates terms for compensation must hold the same MLO license as any other originator. In practice the title describes an entry-level loan officer who meets applicants, gathers financial information, explains loan options, and submits files for underwriting while supervised by a licensed employer. Entry-level pay typically sits near the lower end of the loan officer wage distribution, about $39,430 to $52,730 (BLS, May 2025).
