What is a mortgage?

A mortgage is a home loan: a loan taken primarily for personal, family, or household use and secured by a mortgage, deed of trust, or equivalent consensual security interest on a dwelling or residential real estate. That is the federal statutory definition of a residential mortgage loan under the Secure and Fair Enforcement Mortgage Licensing Act (SAFE Act).
