What is a mortgage loan originator license?

A mortgage loan originator (MLO) license is the state-issued credential required under the SAFE Act for an individual who takes residential mortgage loan applications and offers or negotiates loan terms for compensation or gain. To qualify, you must complete 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-licensing education, pass the SAFE MLO test with a score of at least 75%, and clear FBI fingerprint and credit checks. The license renews annually.
