What is an independent loan processor?

An independent loan processor is a contract worker who prepares residential mortgage files for lenders or brokers rather than working as a supervised employee. Under the SAFE Act, an independent contractor who performs loan processing or underwriting on residential mortgage loans must be licensed as a state mortgage loan originator, while processors who work at the direction of, and under the supervision of, a licensed originator are not required to hold a license.
