What is continuing education in the mortgage industry?

Continuing education (CE) is the annual coursework a state-licensed mortgage loan originator must complete to renew the license. Federal law requires at least 8 hours of NMLS-approved CE each year: 3 hours of federal law and regulations, 2 hours of ethics (including fraud, consumer protection, and fair lending), 2 hours on nontraditional mortgage products, and 1 elective hour. Many states add state-specific hours on top of the federal 8.
