What is the difference between a mortgage loan officer and a mortgage lender?

A mortgage loan officer is an individual who takes residential mortgage loan applications and offers or negotiates loan terms for compensation; a mortgage lender is the financial institution that actually makes the direct loan. The loan officer does not approve the loan or decide the amount lent; the lender's underwriting department evaluates the borrower's risk and makes that decision.
