What is the difference between an underwriter and a loan officer?

A loan officer works directly with borrowers, gathering financial information, explaining loan types and terms, and preparing the application. An underwriter then reviews the completed file and makes the approval decision. Loan officers do not decide whether a loan is approved; they pass applications to the underwriting department, which assesses the borrower's creditworthiness. Underwriters generally work behind the scenes and do not negotiate loan terms with consumers.
