The breakdown is 6 hours of legal education (2 hours per year covering laws, rules, and court cases), 3 hours of fair housing (1 hour per year), and 9 hours of elective courses. Can I renew my real estate license after it expires in Michigan? In order to reinstate your Michigan real estate salesperson's license within 3 years of your license expiration date, you must pay the required application processing fee, the late renewal fee, and the per-year license fee. Then, you must complete one of the following: Complete the required continuing education credits (6-18 credits in total); or, Complete the 40-hour Michigan pre-license course; or, Retake and pass the Michigan state licensing exam. If you do not reinstate your license within 3 years of your license expiration date, you must retake the 40-hour Michigan pre-license course, retake and pass the state licensing exam, and submit a new license application.
What can you do with an inactive license and how do you keep it active in Michigan? Having an inactive real estate license in Michigan means that you can’t engage in real estate sales. However, you can still mentor and consult, or carry out real estate referrals with your industry knowledge and contacts. You will have three years from the expiration date of your license within which to reinstate it. If you do not reinstate the license within three years, you’ll have to retake the 40-hour pre-license course, as well as retake and pass the state licensing exam, and submit a whole new license application.
The salesperson renewal fee is $78 per 3-year cycle, and the broker renewal fee is $108 per 3-year cycle. A $20 late fee applies during the 60-day late renewal period following the expiration date. If a license has expired for less than 3 years, the relicensure fee is $108 for a salesperson and $163 for a broker. Michigan real estate licenses are valid for 3 years from the date of issuance. NAR requires members to complete Code of Ethics training every 3 years. Current Cycle 8 runs from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2027, and includes a 2-hour Fair Housing requirement added beginning January 2025. This NAR requirement is separate from Michigan's state-mandated 18-hour CE cycle and is tracked through the member's local REALTOR® association.
