Missouri real estate CE requirements for license renewal

Missouri real estate licensees must complete 12 hours of MREC-approved continuing education every two years to renew an active license, with at least 3 hours in a Commission-designated CORE course. The Missouri Real Estate Commission (MREC) sets the core topic each cycle, approves education providers, and processes renewals through the MOPRO online portal. Real estate CE requirements apply equally to salespersons and brokers, and the current 2026-2028 renewal period requires a CORE course on Fair Housing.

Missouri real estate license renewal cycle and expiration dates

Missouri real estate licenses renew on a two-year cycle, with brokers and salespersons expiring on different dates within even-numbered years. Broker licenses expire June 30 of even-numbered years, and salesperson licenses expire September 30 of even-numbered years, per the MREC CEU requirements page^[1].

The current cycle covers the 2026-2028 license period. Broker licensees submit renewals during June of the expiration year, and salesperson licensees renew during September. MREC encourages licensees to submit early to allow processing time.

As of July 30, 2023, MREC no longer automatically issues physical license certificates. Licensees download PDF copies from the MOPRO online system^[2].

MREC sends renewal notices before each expiration date, but failure to receive a notice does not excuse the renewal requirement. The MREC main page^[2] states: "It is ultimately the responsibility of each licensee to ensure that all continuing education requirements have been satisfied prior to renewal."

CE hour requirements for Missouri license renewal

Active Missouri licensees must complete 12 hours of approved real estate instruction during each license period before they can renew. The MREC CEU requirements page^[1] specifies this as a minimum for all active license holders.

Any mix of additional core and elective topics fills the remaining coursework. Licensees who prefer can take all hours as core. Credits do not roll into the next cycle if exceeded, and CE may be taken at any point during the license period.

Both salespersons and brokers follow the same CE standard, making continuing education for real estate agents a uniform requirement regardless of license tier or experience level.

CORE course topics and how they change each renewal cycle

MREC designates a specific CORE course topic for each renewal period, and every licensee must complete at least 3 hours in that topic. For the 2026-2028 renewal period, the required CORE course topic is Fair Housing, per the MREC main page^[2]. The next 2028-2030 renewal period will require a CORE course on Agency.

Under Rule 20 CSR 2250-10.100(3)^[2], MREC must publish the core course topic on its website by March 31 of each even-numbered year. If a licensee takes only one CORE course during the 2026-2028 period, it must be a Fair Housing course. Licensees may also complete additional CORE courses beyond the required hours to satisfy the remaining CE.

Previous CORE topics have included Missouri license law, broker supervision and escrow account management, property management, commercial brokerage, and agency and brokerage relationships.

Renewing through the MOPRO online portal

Missouri licensees renew through the MOPRO online portal, which provides 24/7 access for license management, CE tracking, and renewal submissions. The system launched January 14, 2025, replacing the previous renewal process.

Steps to renew:

1. Complete all required CE before your license expiration date.
2. Verify that your education provider has reported your course completions to MOPRO before submitting your renewal.
3. Log in to MOPRO and submit your renewal application with the required fee.
4. Download your renewed license PDF from the portal.

If CE is completed near the expiration date, the provider's reporting window may not allow enough time for hours to appear in MOPRO before the deadline. In that case, licensees may need to submit a paper renewal with completion certificates attached.

Falsely indicating CE completion at renewal can result in disciplinary action and additional CE requirements. Name and address changes cannot be made during the renewal transaction itself; licensees should update this information in MOPRO before starting the renewal process.

Missouri real estate license renewal fees

Under 20 CSR 2250-5.020^[3], effective July 1, 2024, the Missouri Code of State Regulations sets the following renewal fees for real estate licenses:

A minimal online convenience fee may apply when renewing through MOPRO. All fees are nonrefundable.

Late renewal, license expiration, and reinstatement

If a licensee misses the renewal deadline, Missouri allows late renewal with escalating penalties. Under MREC Rule 20 CSR 2250-4.020^[4], a delinquent fee of $50 per month or partial month applies, capped at a maximum of $200.

During the late period, the licensee cannot legally practice real estate. Late renewals cannot be submitted online and require paper submission with proof of CE completion. If a renewal is postmarked late, the licensee's record will reflect a break in licensure.

If a licensee fails to renew during the subsequent renewal period — meaning the next full two-year cycle passes without renewal — the license becomes void. The licensee must then requalify as an original applicant, which includes retaking pre-licensing education and the licensing exam. Both the licensee and their sponsoring broker may face disciplinary action for conducting real estate activity without an active license.

Inactive license status and CE requirements

Missouri licensees who place their license on inactive status are not required to complete continuing education during the inactive period. To reactivate an inactive license, the licensee must complete the 24-hour Missouri Real Estate Practice (MREP) Course.

This reactivation requirement applies regardless of how long the license has been inactive. The MREP course is separate from the standard CE requirement and does not count toward CE for the renewal cycle in which reactivation occurs.

First-time renewal requirements in Missouri

For the 2026-2028 renewal cycle, first-time renewals follow the same standard CE requirement as all other renewals. Current MREC CE requirements pages^[1] do not list a separate first-renewal education requirement.

An older version of the MREC general information page stated that new salespersons must complete the Missouri Real Estate Practice Course before their first renewal. That page, dated 2006, appears to reflect a requirement that has since been removed from current MREC rules. The MREP Course remains an approved course type and may still apply to certain licensees, but current MREC sources do not list it as a first-renewal mandate.

CE course formats and approved providers

Missouri approves online, classroom, live online, and on-demand formats for continuing education courses. Licensees can complete all CE hours through any combination of approved formats, making real estate education online a flexible option for working professionals.

MREC maintains a list of approved education providers on its website. Missouri REALTORS®^[5] also offers CE courses covering Code of Ethics, Fair Housing, and Missouri REALTORS® Forms, and partners with additional online providers. Real estate CE courses from any MREC-approved provider satisfy the renewal requirement, whether taken as real estate online classes or in a classroom setting.

Course completion dates are recorded using Central Standard Time.

Tracking and verifying your CE credits

The MOPRO system displays each licensee's accumulated CE hours. After a course ends, there can be a delay before the provider's completion report appears in the system.

MREC has identified a potential system issue in MOPRO affecting CE hour calculation and display, and advises licensees to independently verify their recorded hours before submitting renewal. If hours are missing, licensees should contact their education provider for a duplicate completion certificate, as MREC does not maintain individual CE records for licensees.

For non-preapproved courses, licensees must submit an Independent Course Evaluation (ICE) form to receive credit. The deadline for broker licensees to submit ICE forms is March 30, and for salesperson licensees, June 30, of the renewal year.

NAR education requirements separate from Missouri state CE

Members of the National Association of REALTORS® have separate education obligations that operate on a different schedule from Missouri state CE. These NAR requirements do not count toward the state-mandated CE requirement unless the specific course is also MREC-approved.

For the 2026-2028 cycle, a Missouri CORE course on Fair Housing that carries separate NAR approval may satisfy both the state core requirement and the NAR Fair Housing training obligation. Licensees should confirm dual approval with their course provider.
