What to do after passing real estate exam?

After you pass your real estate licensing exam you typically have a set number of months by when to apply for your license.

The next step is to start interviewing with real estate brokers so can choose one to work for. Some states would require you to purchase an E&O insurance at this stage. Then submit your license application and pay the licensure fee.

Alabama

I passed my Alabama real estate exam now what?

Immediately upon the successful completion of your state exam, you’ll receive an Alabama temporary salesperson license application. You have 90 days from the date you pass the exam to submit the application and its supporting documents to the AREC. The Commission recommends you time your submission with your fingerprinting as it only has access to your background check for 30 days.

Alaska

What happens after you pass your real estate exam in Alaska?

Congratulations on passing your Alaska salesperson licensing exam! You now have six months to apply for your license. The next step is to start interviewing with real estate brokers and to be hired. You’ll also need to purchase errors and omissions insurance. Once you have been hired and bought E&O insurance, submit your license application and the licensure fee.

Arizona

I just passed my Arizona real estate exam now what?

Immediately upon completion of your state exam, you’ll receive an Arizona salesperson license application. You have (1) year from the date you pass the exam to submit the application to the ADRE. If you haven’t already, begin the process to get your Fingerprint Clearance Card. This can take up to ten weeks. At the same time, schedule your 6-hour Contract Writing Course and find a Arizona licensed broker to work under. An Arizona broker must hire you before you can activate your license.

Arkansas

I just passed my Arkansas real estate exam now what?

Congratulations on passing the Arkansas state licensing exam! Your next step is to send your licensing fee, official score report, and signed post-license requirement notice to the Arkansas Real Estate Commission. The AREC will review the documents and issue you a license. Now you have six months to take 18 hours of post-licensing education.

California

What to do after passing real estate exam in California?

If you previously submitted a Salesperson Examination Application to apply for the state exam, the DRE will mail you a Salesperson License Application after you pass the state exam.
You will have to complete and mail in the Salesperson License Application along with the license application fee, and a copy of your Live Scan Service Request form.
If you are an out-of-state applicant, you will also have to submit a completed and notarized Consent to Service of Process form.

If you previously submitted a Combined Exam/License Application, the DRE will issue you your real estate salespersons license.

Colorado

I just passed my Colorado real estate exam now what?

Congratulations! Now that you have passed your state license exam, you will need to be fingerprinted and purchase E&O insurance before you submit your online broker application.

Colorado will match your background check and fingerprints to your broker license application once they are received. Follow your application status online. You will need an approved and active license before you can transact real estate in Colorado.

Connecticut

I just passed my Connecticut real estate exam now what?

Congratulations on passing the Connecticut real estate salesperson licensing exam. Your next steps to becoming a licensed real estate agent are to be hired by a Connecticut real estate broker. Once you have been hired, you'll need to pay the $285 license activation fee to activate your license and become a practicing salesperson.

Delaware

I passed my Delaware real estate exam now what ?

Congratulations on passing the Delaware State licensing exam. You need to be hired by a Delaware licensed broker for your next steps. You need to submit their information as your broker of record with your license application.

Once you have been hired, go ahead and create a DELPROS account to start the license application process. You have a year after passing the state exam to submit your application.

Florida

What to do after passing real estate exam in Florida?

If you pass your state exam, you will receive an official photo-bearing exam result report immediately following completion of your test. You should verify that the information is correct on the exam results before leaving the test center. Pearson VUE will download your passing grade information to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation system, which will then issue your real estate license number. You can expect your license to be issued, in inactive status, within 7 to 10 business days of passing the exam.

An active license will be issued when you submit the licensing information for your supervising broker to the Florida Real Estate Commission. Your new broker will need to sign your license activation application. Once this form has been submitted you will be ready to legally perform real estate services in Florida. Your license will remain in inactive status and you will not be able to practice real estate until you submit your signed license activation application.

Georgia

What to do after passing real estate exam in Georgia?

Once you pass the State exam, you can then apply for your license at the PSI testing center.

You will receive a Certificate of Accuracy Statement, which will be used when you apply for your license.

You must apply for your license within 12 months of taking the State exam. If you apply for your license within 3 months of taking the State exam, the license application fee is $170. If you apply between 3 and 12 months, the license application fee is $340. If you do not apply within 12 months, you must retake the State exam.

You will have the option to apply for an active or inactive license. If you have a sponsoring broker by the time you pass the State exam, you may apply for an active license.

If you do not have a sponsoring broker, you must apply for an inactive license.

If you are applying for an active license, you must submit the following 5 documents when applying for your license at the PSI testing center:

1) Valid ID along with the Certificate of Accuracy Statement.

2) A completed Sponsoring Broker Statement form, which must be completed by the broker you will eventually work for.

3) A nonrefundable license fee of $170 payable via credit card, cashier’s check or money order.

4) A criminal history report or Georgia Crime Information Report (GCIC), which is no more than 60 days old. This document can be obtained from any local sheriff’s office or police department.

5) Signed and notarized Lawful Presence Affidavit.

Once your documents are reviewed and approved you will receive the following certifications:

One 8-½”x4” wall certificate, two pocket cards, and one 8-½”x11” wall certificate.

You must give your sponsoring broker one of the wall certificates and one of the pocket cards.

Hawaii

What to do after passing real estate exam in Hawaii?

Congratulations on passing the Hawaii state real estate licensing exam. Once you pass the exam, you will receive your license application at the test center. You have two years to submit this application to the Hawaii real estate branch. With your application, you'll need to submit your original pre-license education equivalency certificate or the course completion certificate from your real estate school. You also need to pay the licensing fee that is printed on your score report.

Along with the licensing application, you will want to find a managing broker to work under. They will supervise your work in real estate.

Idaho

I just passed my Idaho real estate exam now what?

Congratulations on passing the Idaho real estate salesperson licensing exam. You will want to concurrently do two things. First, make sure you get your fingerprints taken to run the background check for your license. Background checks can take from one week to 12 weeks to process and are good for six months. At the same time, you will want to be interviewing and be hired by an Idaho licensed broker. You must be hired by a broker who will activate your license.

Make sure you sign up for the Idaho Real Estate Commission Online Services. Here you will be able to track your license history and check on your fingerprinting status. You can submit your application until your background check clears. Once your background check clears, go ahead and submit your license application. Make sure you purchase errors and omissions insurance and show proof of coverage with your application.

The Idaho Real Estate Commission will issue you a license on inactive status. Your hiring broker will go online to activate your license.

Illinois

I passed my Illinois real estate exam now what?

Now that you have passed your Illinois broker real estate exam your next step should be to find a managing broker to work under. Once you have been hired by an Illinois license broker, you can submit your license application.

Indiana

What to do after you pass your real estate exam in Indiana?

Congratulations! Now that you have passed your state license exam, you will need to submit your broker application form to receive a real estate license. An active license will require you to have a sponsoring broker. You can still receive your license without one, but it will be an inactive or unassigned license. You will not be able to transact real estate until you submit information about a sponsoring broker and change to an active license.

Iowa

I just passed my Iowa real estate exam now what?

Congratulations on passing the Iowa salesperson real estate exam. You should get to work right away finding a sponsoring broker. All salespersons must work under the supervision of a licensed Iowa broker. You should also purchase Errors and Omissions insurance. Once a broker has hired you and you have E&O Insurance, you'll need to submit your license application. You have only six months from the day you pass your exam to complete all these steps.

Kansas

I just passed my Kansas real estate exam now what?

Congratulations on passing the Kansas salesperson licensing exam. Your must find a licensed broker to supervise your work. Work to be hired by a licensed broker. Once you have been hired, file your license application as soon as possible. You only have six months after passing the exam to submit your application. However, some of the supporting documentation is only valid for six months, such as your background check and your Kansas Practice Course completion certificate.

Kentucky

I passed my Kentucky real estate exam now what?

Congratulations on passing your Kentucky state licensing exam! Your next steps will be to use the license application you received at the PSI Testing Center, or the emailed instructions from the Kentucky Real Estate Commission, to apply for your sales associate license. You will need to purchase errors and omissions insurance, gather up your documentation, and submit it all as one package to the KREC.

Louisiana

I passed my Louisiana real estate exam now what?

Congratulations! Now that you passed your state license exam, you need to order a background check, find a sponsoring broker, and purchase E&O insurance. You’ll need to do this before you submit Part B of the online salesperson application.

Louisiana background checks are only good for 180 days. Time your submission so your results are still in the LREC system. Track your application status online.

Maine

I passed my Maine real estate exam now what?

Congratulations on passing the seals agent licensing exam. You now have one year to apply for your license. To submit your application, you will need to be hired by a Maine licensed broker.

The application will require you to submit your course completion certificate and your official exam score report. You'll also submit an authorization for a criminal record check and pay the $121 fee.

Maryland

I passed my Maryland real estate exam now what?

Your next step is to find a sponsoring, licensed real estate broker to work under. Your broker’s information is part of your license application. About 3-5 business days after passing the exam, the MREC will email you a registration number and application instructions. You’ll need to set up an account and follow the steps to submit the application.

Massachusetts

I passed my Massachusetts real estate exam now what?

You must be prepared to pay your licensing fee the same day you take your exam. First, you will see your score report on screen. Next, you will report to the testing proctor. Your licensing fee will be prorated based on Massachusetts General Law Chapter 112, Sections 87XX and 87ZZ. Cash will not be accepted, only credit cards, personal checks, money orders, and cashier's checks, all made payable to PSI. Your photograph will be taken, and you will be issued a license card and wall certificate. If you do not pay for your license upon passing the exam, you must fill out a license application instruction form to apply by mail within 30 days.

Michigan

What to do after passing real estate exam in Michigan?

If your sponsoring broker confirmed your employment through MiPLUS at least 48 business hours prior to your exam date, you will receive a photo pocket license at the PSI testing center right after you pass the state exam. This will allow you to start work immediately as a Michigan real estate salesperson.
Your exam information is typically imported into your MiPLUS account within 48 business hours after passing the exam. Once LARA receives your passing score, and your broker sponsorship is confirmed, a state-issued paper wall license and pocket card will be mailed to your sponsoring broker's main office.

If you have a sponsoring broker but your employment was not confirmed before your state exam pass date, your broker must submit an Employing Broker Notification form. Once the form is received and processed by LARA, a photo pocket license, state-issued paper wall license, and pocket card will be mailed to your sponsoring broker.

Please note, you must pass the state licensing exam and have a Michigan employing broker within one year of applying for your license. Otherwise, you must resubmit a new license application and retake the state licensing exam.

Minnesota

I passed my Minnesota real estate exam now what?

Once you have passed both portions of the Minnesota real estate licensing exam, your next step is to find a Minnesota licensed broker to work with. You will not be able to apply for your real estate license without a sponsoring broker, as they submit the application for you.

You have one year from the date you successfully passed the exam to apply for your real estate license. You will want to find your broker before this time expires.

In addition, you must successfully pass Course II and Course III before applying for your license.

Mississippi

I passed my Mississippi real estate exam now what?

Congratulations on passing your Mississippi salesperson real estate licensing exam. Next is waiting for your background check to clear and the Mississippi Real Estate Commission to confirm your passing score. They will mail your real estate license directly to your employing broker.

Missouri

What to do after passing real estate exam in Missouri?

When a candidate has met the education requirements (the 48-hour pre-exam course plus the 24-hour real estate practice course) and has passed the Missouri State real estate exam, he or she is eligible for a real estate license in Missouri. The next step to obtaining a Missouri real estate license is to complete the Missouri real estate license application.

Montana

I passed my Montana real estate exam now what?

Nevada

Congratulations on passing the state licensing exam! Your next steps are to submit your fingerprints for a background check. You must be fingerprinted by one of the approved fingerprint vendors. You'll also need to find a licensed broker to work under. Once you have been fingerprinted and have an employing broker, fill out Form 549 to apply for your real estate salesperson license.

New Hampshire

What to do after passing real estate exam in New Hampshire?

Congratulations on passing the New Hampshire real estate salesperson licensing exam. Your next step is to be hired by a licensed real estate broker. You have six months to find and be hired by a licensed broker. You will also need three individuals not related to you to sign your license application attesting to your good moral character. In addition, you may need additional documentation to your answers and questions 1-6 in part four of the license application. You need to gather these documents before you submit your license application. Your license application must be submitted within six months of passing the state exam.

New Jersey

What to do after passing real estate exam in New Jersey?

Congratulations on passing the state real estate licensing exam. Start interviewing with New Jersey Managing Brokers right away. You’ll also need to schedule fingerprints for a background check. At this point, you’ll have less than one year to be hired and submit your license application. You are only eligible for one year from the date you passed your pre-license course.

New Mexico

What to do after passing real estate exam in New Mexico?

Congratulations on passing the New Mexico broker exam. Your next steps will be to submit your fingerprints for a background check. You also need to begin the process of interviewing with licensed real estate employing brokers. Purchase E&O insurance or ask your qualifying broker to provide a Certificate of Insurance regarding current coverage. Finally, you have six months to turn in the license application form found at the end of the Candidate Information Bulletin or on the NMREC website under forms and to pay the non-refundable license application fee.

New York

What to do after passing real estate exam in New York?

After you pass the NY state licensing exam, you can then apply for your NY real estate salespersons license through your eAccessNY account.
Please note, you cannot apply for your license until you have a sponsoring broker.

North Carolina

What to do after passing real estate exam in North Carolina?

Once you have passed North Carolina’s license exam and the Commission has deemed you to be of good character, you will be qualified for licensure. You can expect to receive your license certificate in the mail at the address you provided on your application form in up to 10 business days.

When you receive your license, it will be in inactive, provisional status. Before you can begin practicing real estate, you will need a broker-in-charge to file a License Activation/Affiliation form online with the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.

A provisional broker must be supervised at all times by a broker-in-charge when engaging in real estate brokerage activities. To remove your provisional status, you will need to satisfy the post-licensing educational requirement of 90 classroom hours. The post-licensing education program consists of three, 30-hour courses titled:

• Broker Relationships and Responsibilities
• Contracts and Closing
• License Law, Commission Rules and Legal Concepts

Once you have successfully completed all three courses, your provisional status will be automatically terminated by the Commission, as approved real estate schools automatically report course completion to the Commission.

You cannot stay on provisional status indefinitely; you must complete your 90-hour post-licensing requirement within 18 months of your initial licensure. If you fail to do so, your license status will change to inactive. Once you have completed the necessary education requirement, your license will move from provisional broker to broker status. The post-licensing education requirement must be completed as in-person classroom only.

North Dakota

What to do after passing real estate exam in North Dakota?

Congratulations on passing the North Dakota salesperson licensing exam. Your next step is to be hired by a state-licensed real estate broker. You'll need to purchase errors and omissions insurance. Once you have a sponsoring broker and insurance, turn in the license activation form with your official score report and the $20 education, research, and recovery fund fee.

Ohio

What to do after passing real estate exam in Ohio?

Congratulations! PSI will notify the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing you have passed the exam. The ODRE will issue your salesperson license in a few business days.

Oklahoma

What to do after you pass your real estate exam in Oklahoma?

Congratulations on passing the Oklahoma salesperson real estate exam. Your next step is to start interviewing and be hired by a Managing broker. You have one year to be hired by a broker. You will also need to apply for your provisional sales associate license issuance. You'll need a broker to approve you before you can resume these steps. You also need to take a 45-hour post-licensing course within one year.

Oregon

What to do after you pass your real estate exam in Oregon?

Congratulations! Immediately after passing your state license exam, you will be fingerprinted at the exam center. The fingerprints are used in a state and national background check.

While Oregon processes your background check and fingerprints, find a Principal Broker to work under. You have one year to be hired and activated. Track your broker license application online. Once your application and background check are approved, your Principal Broker will add you to their business license and activate your license.

Pennsylvania

What to do after passing real estate exam in Pennsylvania?

After successfully passing the state exam, you will receive a document stating that you have taken the exam and instructions will be included on how to obtain the official score reports through your profile on Pearson VUE at https://home.pearsonvue.com/pa/realestate. You are required to submit the passing score reports to the Pennsylvania Real Estate Commission as proof of passing the exam and as part of the licensure process. The exam results are good for 3 years from the date of passing.

Once you have obtained your official score reports, you are now ready to apply for your real estate license.

You must complete the following steps:

Step 1:
Obtain a criminal record check through the PATCH website.

Step 2:
Submit your Pennsylvania real estate salesperson application online through the state's PALS system.

Step 3:
Along with your license application, you must submit a copy of your criminal record check, your two Certificates of Completion (for the 75-hour pre-license course), a copy of your state exam score report (which shows that you have passed both portions of the state exam), and pay the $107 application fee.

Step 4:
Have your employing broker complete their portion of your license application through the PALS system.

Once everything is properly completed and uploaded to the PALS system, the Real Estate Commission will need up to one week to approve your application.
Once your application is approved, the Commission will mail a physical copy of your license to your employing broker's main office within 7-10 business days.

Rhode Island

What to do after you pass your real estate exam in Rhode Island?

Congratulations on passing the state licensing exam. Your next step is to get your criminal history record at the Rhode Island Department of the Attorney General. You need to be hired by a Rhode Island licensed principal broker; they have a section to fill out on your application. Purchase errors and omissions insurance. You will need three recommendations from Rhode Island residents who have known you for at least three years and are not related to you. Finally, it will be time to apply for your license.

Once you have worked through all of these steps, you can make your license application and become a Rhode Island salesperson. You have one year from the date you passed the exam to file your licensing application.

South Carolina

What to do after passing real estate exam in South Carolina?

Once you have passed both the state and national portions of the licensing exam, you will need to take the remaining steps necessary so that your license can be issued.

If you haven’t done so already, you will need to get your fingerprints taken before your license application can be approved. Your fingerprints are used to conduct a criminal background check by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the FBI. The cost of having your fingerprints taken will vary by location, but you will be responsible for paying the fee.

The South Carolina Real Estate Commission will email you with instructions on how to obtain your fingerprints after your exam application for real estate is received by the commission.

If you have not yet completed the 30-hour South Carolina Unit II advanced real estate principles course, you will need to do so. You will need to provide a copy of this certificate of completion with your license application.

When you pass the state exam, you will be provided with an Initial salesperson license application from PSI. You must submit your license application, your certificate of completion for the 30-hour advanced real estate principles course, the $50 license application fee, and a copy of your state exam score report.

Once approved, the South Carolina Real Estate Commission will mail your license to your managing broker and you will then be allowed to practice real estate.

If you have not identified a designated broker by the time you make your application, you will be issued an inactive license. Otherwise, you will be issued an active license upon approval of your application.

South Dakota

What to do after passing real estate exam in South Dakota?

Congratulations on passing your broker associate exam. Your next steps are to:
• Get fingerprinted for your background check
• Purchase E&O insurance
• Submit the broker associate application
• Interview with qualifying brokers

Note that you don't need to be hired by a broker before submitting the license application. You have 60 days after passing the final section to apply for your license.

Tennessee

What to do after passing real estate exam in Tennessee?

Your next step in the process is to make your application to the Tennessee Real Estate Commission for your affiliate broker license. Applications forms and other information can be found on the TREC website. In addition to your application and picture, you will need to include proof that you are a high school graduate or equivalent; have completed all required pre-license education; proof of errors and omissions insurance coverage; and provide payment of all fees. You must make your application within six months of passing the state exam.

Texas

What to do after passing real estate exam in Texas?

Once you pass the state licensing exam, you will be eligible to receive your real estate license.

If you cleared your background check, TREC will email you your license document within 5-10 business days of passing the state licensing exam.
You will initially receive an inactive license. However, if you have a sponsoring broker and wish to obtain an active license, you must complete a sponsorship request by using TREC’s online services and paying the $10 fee.

You also have the option of mailing in a Sales Agent Sponsorship Form-1, which includes a paper filing fee of $30.

Utah

What to do after you pass your real estate exam in Utah?

Congratulations on passing the exam! Along with your score report, you will receive instructions on applying for a Utah sales agent license. You will have 90 days to submit your application, its accompanying paperwork and pay the license fee.

Vermont

What to do after you pass your real estate exam in Vermont?

Congratulations on passing the Vermont National real estate licensing exam. Your next step is to be hired by a Vermont licensed broker. Your broker must complete a supervision form as part of the license application process. You turn in the salesperson license application online. The Vermont state portion of the licensing exam is also administered online through the OPR.

Once the OPR does a final application review, it will issue you a Vermont real estate salesperson license. You have 90 days to take an 8-hour post-license course.

Virginia

What to do after passing real estate exam in Virginia?

Once you pass the Virginia state licensing exam, you can then get fingerprinted and submit your Salesperson License Application.
You must get fingerprinted at the PSI testing center. It is recommended that you get fingerprinted after completing the state exam, rather than before.
It takes up to 4-6 weeks for to process your fingerprints and submit them to the Board.
In the meantime, you can mail or fax your Salesperson License Application to the Board, with the help of your sponsoring broker.
Your fingerprints cannot be older than 45 days from the date they are received by the Board until the date your license application is received.
Also, you must apply for your VA real estate license within one year of your first attempt at the state licensing exam.

Washington

What to do after passing real estate exam in Washington?

Once you have passed the state licensing exam, you will need to take the remaining steps necessary before your license can be issued.

If you have not already done so, you will need to get your fingerprints taken with MorphoTrust’s IdentoGO. You will need to go in-person to one of IndentoGO’s locations for this to be completed. There is a fee of $42.80, paid directly to IndentoGO.

Your fingerprints will be used by the Washington State Patrol, as well as the FBI, to conduct a criminal background check. A report of the results will be electronically forwarded to the Washington State Department of Licensing for its review in considering your application.

PSI will send the results of your passing grade for the state exam to the Department within three days of you successfully completing both portions of the exam. Once this has been done, you will be able to submit your actual application online through your

SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account. You will then be able to apply for your broker license online. You will also need to pay the $146.25 license application fee, which can be paid online when making your application.

Be sure to make your application within 12 months of successfully passing the exam to avoid having to repeat it.

If you do not have a designated broker by the time you make your application, you will be issued an inactive license. Otherwise, you will receive an active license once your application is approved.

West Virginia

What to do after passing real estate exam in West Virginia?

Congratulations on passing the West Virginia salesperson real estate exam. Your final step is to turn in the salesperson license issuance letter and pay the $75 license fee. This form is found on page thirteen of your Candidate Information Handbook. You have three months from passing the test to turn it in. Your license will be sent to your employing broker.

Wisconsin

What to do after passing real estate exam in Wisconsin?

Once you pass the Wisconsin state licensing exam, you are now eligible to submit your Wisconsin Real Estate Salesperson license application, either online or via a mail-in paper application.

Wyoming

What to do after passing real estate exam in Wyoming?

Congratulations on passing the state’s licensing exam. Your next steps are to:
• Be hired by Wyoming licensed broker
• Purchase Errors and Omissions Insurance
• Take a front facial view photograph
