Commonly Asked Questions on Acquiring a Real Estate License in North Carolina

There are some mandatory norms to fulfill before you can apply for an NC real estate license.  

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Be a citizen of the USA or a legally admitted migrant with working rights in the country.

There are five steps to go through before you can get a real estate license in North Carolina.

Step 1: Complete the 75-hour real estate pre-licensing course in North Carolina. The course provider selected must be on the approved list of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission. 

Step 2: Visit the NCREC portal and apply for a license. The Commission will process your application and email a Notice of Exam Eligibility.  

PearsonVUE, a professional test provider, conducts the NC licensing exam. Visit the PearsonVUE portal after receiving the Notice to schedule your licensing exam.   

Step 3: On the scheduled date, appear for the exam and pass it. The licensing exam consists of two parts. 

  • The National portion, developed by PearsonVUE, has 80 scored questions and 5 Pretest questions that do not count for marks in the exam.  
  • The State portion is designed by the Commission and has 60 scored questions and 5 Pretest ones.  

The total duration of the licensing exam in North Carolina is 4 hours.  

Step 4: Apply for an NC background check verification or a Criminal Record Report. The Commission accepts such a report only from the Criminal Record Check (CRC).  

Step 5: Once these steps are completed you will be issued a real estate license in North Carolina.
